Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a very gentle technique which rhythmically stretches the skin in order to manually stimulate lymph fluid to flow efficiently through the lymphatic system as it is returned to the heart. You can read more about the Lymphatic System on my blog post here. Your lymph system is responsible for immune surveillance, cellular waste/recycling, fluid balance, and transport/absorption of dietary fats. It’s especially helpful for swelling following surgery or other tissue injury, and lymphedema. It is extremely helpful for boosting the immune system, always necessary now during the pandemic, and also for autoimmune disorder support. Half of your lymph nodes (which filter the lymph and destroy pathogens) are located in your abdomen, so Lymph Drainage always (unless contraindicated) involves some abdominal work, which is a little deeper than the skin stretching technique used during much of the session. It is very helpful for digestive stress. Because the lymph vessels are in close proximity to the cutaneous nerves, both close to the surface of the skin, the gentle and rhythmic stretching of the skin has a positive effect on the entire nervous system, promoting a sense of calm through the whole body.

Watsu® is a unique and amazing form of bodywork, originally developed from practicing Shiatsu massage in warm water. The buoyancy and warmth of the water, combined with Watsu’s specialized stretches and massage, help to free the spine, taking pressure off nerves, joints and muscles. The natural movement and flow of the body and breath allow for deep relaxation and release of long-held patterns. The result is increased circulation to every part of the body, improved physical mobility, stress reduction, and greater feelings of overall well-being. I also practice Healing Dance®, which was developed by Alexander George, a ballet choreographer who practiced Watsu and expanded it to a beautiful movement oriented therapy. Healing Dance also incorporates underwater work, in which the receiver wears nose plugs and is gradually taken underwater, which enables the entire spine to move freely, and allows for even greater freedom of movement and play. Underwater work can be quite transformative, and has been used with success with Veterans and others suffering from PTSD.
